The Impossible Dream

Setting-Broadway: Don Quixote is standing amidst his armor, proud, yet unsure of what to do next.  In the background, a melodious song is being played containing the words, "To dream the impossible dream, to fight the unbeatable foe, to bear with unbearable sorrow, to run where the brave dare not go…" Mr. Q has just been challenged by Aldonza to ‘follow the quest’ in the 1965 hit musical, Man of La Mancha. The impossible dream was about facing up to the Spanish Inquisition.

Setting-Bible: In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon, Daniel had a dream, and visions passed through his mind as he was lying on his bed. He wrote down the substance of his dream.  When he was explained about this dream, and a subsequent one he had, Daniel was told that the events of what he had seen were of the distant future, and because he was confused about their true meanings, was told to disregard them by a man of God.  But these two impossible dreams he had, eventually, over time, have come true.   Impossible for Daniel to understand, yet not a bit impossible for God is His plan for mankind.

Setting-Believers:  As believers in Christ, the impossible we once wondered about, can become true.  Although sinners we are, the possibility for salvation and an eternity in Heaven  can come true.  We are challenged by Jesus to follow our quest, to remain in Him until the day we die.  For some of us some days, it seems like an impossibility, but if we stick to our guns, dream about what is achievable, we will make it.  Did you set a seemingly impossible New Year’s resolution last Sunday?  As you know from yesterday, I did.  Today, I reached my first impossible dream of losing 20 pounds.  My next, probable dream, is to lose five more in the next seven weeks.  I have other dreams already in mind for 2012, some seem more probable than others, but I am encouraged each time I think about a great piece of Scripture in which we believe:  Setting: The Holy Spirit is talking directly with Mary, the mother of Jesus.  He (sorry ladies, I believe the HS to be of masculine gender!) told her that Elizabeth, Mary’s relative (some say cousin), is old and barren, but will have a child in three months, "for, nothing is impossible with God." (Luke 1:37)

If God can do all the magical stuff described by reliable men and women of the Bible, then He most certainly can make your impossible dreams for 2012 to come true. So, follow your quest and repeat after me:

And I know if I'll only be true, to this glorious quest,
That my heart will lie will lie peaceful and calm,
when I'm laid to my rest ...
And the world will be better for this:
That one man, scorned and covered with scars,
Still strove, with his last ounce of courage,
To reach ... the unreachable star ...DREAM, THE IMPOSSIBLE, THE IMPOSSIBLE, THE IMPOSSIBLE, DREAM!
